What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a prescription medication used to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and for Weight Management. The brand name is Wegovy.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Semaglutide in the treatment of chronic weight management for adults struggling with obesity or being overweight.

Semaglutide is an appetite reducer that is a once a week injection. It is only available by prescription. The drug works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake. This can help reduce your appetite, so you consume less food/calories, leading to weight loss. It is recommended to be used in conjunction with exercise and a low-calorie diet.

Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist—a class of medications used to treat obesity as well as type 2 diabetes. The Semaglutide weight-loss method is designed for people who have a BMI (body mass index) ≥30 or a BMI ≥27 and also struggle with weight-related problems such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

How Does Semaglutide Work?

Slows down stomach emptying so that after eating, you feel full longer
Suppresses appetite and food cravings (on average patients eat ~30% less)
Lowers blood glucose levels (without making glucose levels too low)

How much weight can I expect to lose on Semaglutide?

On average the weight loss was 35 lbs in an adult

In a 68-week medical study of 1,961 adults living with obesity or excess weight with a related medical problem. People taking placebo lost an average of 6 lbs (or ~2.5% body weight). The average starting weight for both groups was ~232 lbs.

Used with lifestyle changes, 2.4 mg of subcutaneous SGT weekly resulted in a mean 10% to 15% weight loss (10 to 15 kg) over 68 weeks versus 2% to 3% (3 to 4 kg) with placebo (PC). Most (70% to 80%) lost 5% or more of their body weight.

The Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People With Obesity (STEP) trials have shown the efficacy of semaglutide for the treatment of obesity. In large RCTs, patients receiving semaglutide, 2.4 mg, lost a mean of 6% of their weight by week 12 and 12% of their weight by week 28.
